Frequently Asked Questions For Installing a Fence

Installing a fence can be a daunting task with lots of room for mistakes. If you want to make sure this project goes on without a hitch, here are some frequently asked questions that may make it easier for you.


1. Should I use gravel at the bottom of the hole?

This may be a common suggestion but it is not necessary. 

2. Are there benefits to using sono tubes?

We don’t recommend using them if the fence post hole is dug out in a nice cylindrical way. If however the hole gets to be misshaped because of rocks or roots then we would recommend the use of the tube. 

3. What are the height restrictions?

Fence height restrictions vary by city. Check your city’s bylaws. Below are examples from major Ontario cities.

4. When should I call for a spring booking?

The earlier the better! Give us a call in the winter to ensure that we see you.

5. Do I need a survey?

No, a survey is not necessary. 

6. How do you find your locate pins?

Look for steel bars in the ground in the corners of the property line; they are often painted on top with red spray paint.  

7. Who is responsible for the installation of the fence?

Even if you hire a contractor to install your fence, the property owner is always responsible for any installation. So make sure you follow all the regulations.

8. Can I paint, stain or leave it natural?

You can do any of the three option to get the desired look you want. We offer pre-stained panels in various colours or you can purchase stain through Lanark Cedar.

9. What are the benefits of prefab panels?

There are many benefits to prefab panels, they are high quality lumber, carefully handcrafted and provide a lesser mess when installing. 

10. What should I look for when hiring a contractor to install my fence?

  1. You should ensure they are in good standing with the WSIB (Workplace Safety and Insurance Board) 

  2. Check their references 

  3. Do not pay in full before the work is complete
